Some thoughts on woman's clothing in a movie I saw set in the early 1960's

Hello Ladies,
Yesterday I saw a movie and was struck by the fact that during the early 1960's ladies wore dresses almost all the time. The ladies looked feminine and very pretty. They were very easy to distinguish from men. Now days I don't know most of the time what I'm looking at. I find myself saying "it" because I really need to ask them "What are you a man or a woman ?" Not a problem back then. I noticed that a lot of the fashions were also modest and found several sites that showed free patterns that one can make online. Here are some that I had liked. I hope they will be useful to you also.

How to make a chemisette
I found this regency site that had free directions for a chemisette. I was looking into this because I got a free pattern that was nice but it was too open in the neck area. I knew that during the regency era they used chemisettes. I didn't like some of the modern ones called dickeys because they would sometime show parts under the neck. So what I liked was the fact that they used a drawstring to tie it under the bust. So what I am going to do is take a modern blouse pattern I have and modify it so that it reaches below my bust and I will put elastic so it will stay down. Take a look at the site above and see if you too can come up with your own kind of modern chemisette to make some of your clothes more modest.

Gohn Bros - dry goods store catering to plain and modest dressed people

This is a really nice old fashioned store. It has been around for about 100 years and I spoke with the lady in the store and she was so nice and helpful. They don't have pictures in their catalog but she told me that one can get samples of the fabrics. They had some really hard to find items. I liked the bonnet board (special stiffing material to hold the brim of a bonnet in shape), shadow slip (a slip with an extra panel in the front and back to keep the legs from showing through the dress), and the nylon slip fabric (I can never find it in the regular sewing stores any more), also, they had a wide range of cottons and polycottons that would be good for underclothes too. If you need slips they had several styles of those and many many more useful items. Click the link above to see the wonderful items this store has for sell.

A site that teaches how to make your own sinar tichel
I fount this blog that has directions for making ones own sinar tichel. I thought it might be of use to our Christian lady friends who cover. It looks like a fun project that can use up scrap materials and the sinar tichel really does look beautiful.

LeeLach - A modest dress site

This is another site recommended by one of our readers. They state that the dresses, skirts etc are at least below the knee. They also have some items that are mid-calf for those of us that follow the Catholic modesty guidelines. The clothes are a little high end but very beautiful. They have lots of 3/4 sleeve lengths in tops and have a wide selection of modest swim dresses. They have the most beautiful head covers I have ever seen. Click the link above and take a good look at these wonderful feminine modest clothes.

One of our readers suggested this site for modest clothes. However, not all of what they have is modest. If you are a Christian lady that follows the Catholic guidelines on modesty, then a lot of the clothes would not be modest at all for you. I personally don't think the swimsuits are modest at all and I don't like a lot of the tights. So look at this site carefully and choose what is really modest to you knowing that you really have to pick and choose in this site.

Thoughts on Modest Dress
If a young lady wishes to marry one day the man she always dreamed of, she might be willing to change the way she dresses in order to keep herself pure for him (Proverbs 31:12). If a young lady has chosen to save herself for one man on the whole earth, he must be the sort of man who is honorable, able to be fully trusted, one you could pour your whole heart out to and know your secrets won’t ever leave him. This sort of man would have made a covenant with his eyes not to look on a woman to lust after her beauty. He would be a man who would be keeping himself pure for the one whom he would some day meet and marry for life. He would be looking for a young woman who does not give every man who sees her hope for a relationship with her (Proverbs 11:22; Ecclesiastes 7:25-29; Proverbs 31:30).

You see, the way a girl dresses speaks of what is in her heart. If she loves her Savior, Jesus, she will dress to please Him. How does she know what clothes Jesus likes? By knowing Jesus and in careful study of His words we can know what He desires for us. The Holy Spirit will make us feel uneasy about wearing clothes that are too revealing.
A young woman who desires to please her Savior will wear clothing that would draw a person’s eyes to her face, where shines the beauty of her heart (Matthew 6:22-23). You can tell a lot from looking at a person’s eyes. The face of one who lives in the presence of God shines with the glory of God (Exodus 34:29, Ecclesiastes 8:1; Matthew 17:2). A life of sin wears a face of shame and darkness is in the eyes.

Our choice is will we trust the Lord Jesus to choose our husband for us, or will we continue to try our best to allure men by the way we dress, that we are humans, prone to sin, might find the honorable mate?

A man who is looking for a mate who is pure in her heart and serving God with her life would be drawn to one who dresses with modesty in mind. Her clothes would not draw attention to her chest or her buttocks or her legs, because the young woman who chooses clothes to please the Lord wants to direct others to Jesus and His love. Our faces are to be the focal point in what we wear. Some heave found scarves to be great tools for drawing attention to the face. They allow you to use lots of creativity in the choice of colors and the way you tie them around the neck. Of course, scarves would not be appropriate
for every occasion. A short necklace can also be the perfect piece to complete an outfit. There is an array of broaches and pins for sale today, which can be used with a dressy outfit or a casual one. You would wear these pieces near your face. If they, or any other eye-catching accessory, is worn some place other than near the face, it will cause people’s eyes to be drawn away from your face. Keeping this in mind, you can see how patterned hose, or excessive decorations on shoes can be distracting to the eyes. Even wearing clothing that is too loose or too tight will work against the testimony a young woman can have among the people around her.

So, now check out your wardrobe at home. Does it reflect that of one who has dedicated herself to a life of purity to Christ? Adjust some outfits to make them modest. Throw away others, which cannot be made better. Add those garments, which would help build a more Christ-like testimony to your wardrobe. Ask the Lord to guide you and provide clothes that would honor Him. He will bless your efforts.

This article came from a site where a lady was making very lovely blouses and skirts. She closed her site because she no longer had time for this ministry of modest dress. I was very sad because she had some very lovely modest styles for girls and ladies. She wrote a wonderful page on modesty that I am sharing with you.
